The sports badge was awarded by the D.R.L. (German National Union for Physical Training) to German soldiers for athletic achievement and to promote physical fitness among the German people. The silver level badge was given to personnel between 18 and 32 years old who met the required criteria for an eight year period, or those between the ages of 32 to 40 who met the criteria over a twelve month period.
