A fine copy of a German Great Coat
Readers; This writer, a retired historical tailor, was in search of a WW02 great coat for a Maine winter season. I have an East Block wool overcoat for snow blowing and the like. In appearance, it is as sad and bleak as the political system that created it. So, something a bit 'upscale' was in order. After a bit of hunting the internet, to include another Company selling these for circa $30.00 more, I settled on this one, for the price and the reputation for quality that Hessen Antique has for its products. It came today, well packed. I looked it over and was pleased with the attention to detail, and the quality of the workmanship, in making this coat {its from China}. The fabrick label says '80%wool, 20% polyamide{I think it}. It is not as heavy a fabrick as my East Block coat, but its a finer wool quality. probably mid weight. The test is to wear it in the cold. So, I betook a willing dog, and put the coat over a shirt and a light winter long john under shirt, cotton trowsers and boots, and we two are off in 24 degrees and snow, for a dog walk. YES, the coat is warm, and sheds the snow. The length is about to boot tops. The fit is right for a US size 44. But its a SLIM build. You cannot adjust the back belt and central pleat, to make more room for heavier cloathes under it, or more of you in it. It should be adjustable, but its made to one body build, unless you know tailoring skills to alter it. Overall, I do like the coat, its worth the money spent, it looks 'sharp', as does ALL the WW02 German uniforms. Thus good money spent for an OverCoat
