Originally instituted in March 1918 the Brunswick War Merit Cross 1st Class, aka "Ernst-Augustkreuz", was a military decoration awarded to all ranks for merit in battle by the Duke of Brunswick, Ernest Augustus. The 1st Class Cross was larger and produced with a pin-back unlike it's predecessor the smaller Brunswick Cross with ribbon which would be re-designated a second class award by the end of the war .Our reproduction cross features an embossed, central, "EA" cypher for Duke Ernest Augustus, flanked by oak-leaf clusters, with the Brunswick crown at the top arm and the original institution date of "1914" along the bottom arm.
